The investigative project Bihus.Info, which is known for its exposés on corruption and abuse of power, has been targeted for illegal surveillance. Investigative journalists from Bihus.Info reported that they had identified those who had installed hidden cameras in the hotel rooms where they stayed while working on cases.
According to Bihus.Info, the SBU operation lasted from December 15 to 28, 2023. At first, representatives of the Security Service of Ukraine, disguised as clients, visited the recreation center where the editorial office was to be settled and inspected the rooms. Then they returned with large suitcases, which, according to the journalists, contained equipment for installing cameras. Among the participants in the operation were Igor Kravchenko and Yevhen Konovalenko, who work for the SBU.
On December 27, the Bihus.Info editorial staff moved into the complex. On the same day, several people who, according to the journalists, were associated with Igor Kravchenko and conducted surveillance of the editorial office also arrived at the complex. The next day, after the editorial staff had left, another group of men entered the rooms, probably to take away hidden equipment. On January 1, another group returned to the complex.
The journalists claim that hidden cameras were illegally installed in the sauna and eight rooms where the editorial staff was staying. They claim that this was an attempt to violate their right to privacy and freedom of speech, as well as a threat to their safety. They demand that the SBU explain the purpose and scope of the operation and bring those behind it to justice.
Memes about Bihus.Info’s investigation went viral on the Internet and garnered thousands of likes, comments, and shares. Many users expressed their support for the Bihus.Info team and demanded an investigation into the SBU’s actions. It was also suggested that this scandal is another example of pressure on independent media in Ukraine.
