A judge has postponed sentencing former US President Donald Trump in the case of paying money to a porn star through his election campaign. This was reported by Reuters.
The sentencing was scheduled for Wednesday, September 18. However, Donald Trump’s lawyers filed a request to postpone the date of the hearing. They justified this by saying that the announcement of the sentence this month could directly affect the results of the vote for the US president.
Trump’s team argues that the sentencing in the midst of the election campaign is directly tantamount to interference in the electoral process.
New York Supreme Court Justice Juan Merchant agreed with these objections and assured that the court should be impartial and apolitical. Therefore, he emphasized that he was postponing the sentencing process to avoid any grounds that would indicate an influence on the upcoming elections.
Merchan announced that he plans to hand down a verdict on November 26 if the case is not dismissed by then. On November 12, the judge will decide whether Trump should specifically invoke the immunity he had as president.
In a post on his Truth Social social network, Donald Trump emphasized that the case should rightfully be dismissed as preparations for the most important election in the history of the United States continue.
This outcome of the lawsuit is quite successful for Trump, as citizens will not know whether the candidate faces imprisonment until November 5, the day of the US election.
