During the negotiations, the new Syrian government demanded that Russia extradite Bashar al-Assad.

This was reported by Reuters.

The agency’s sources said that Syria’s new leader, Ahmed al-Sharaa, demanded that Moscow extradite former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, who fled to Russia in December last year. As noted, the talks with the Russian delegation led by Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov took place on Tuesday, January 28.

The Syrian authorities emphasize that the resumption of relations should eliminate the mistakes of the past, respect the will of the Syrian people and serve their interests. However, the Kremlin does not want to admit mistakes, so the conversation resulted in only one agreement – the continuation of negotiations.

The journalists of the publication note that Damascus wants Russia, which supported Assad in the civil war, to restore confidence in itself through “concrete measures such as compensation, reconstruction, and rehabilitation.”

At the same time, the Russian authorities are trying to preserve their naval base in Tartus and the Khmeimim air base near the port city of Latakia.
